Allerdings sind unsere westlichen Vorstellungen oft verzerrt oder bruchst\u00fcckhaft. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.main-matsuri.com\/\">Main Matsuri<\/a> schafft genau hier Abhilfe. Seit 2018 holt dieses Kultur-Festival jedes Jahr ein St\u00fcck authentisches Japan an den Main.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marina ist eine der vielen ehrenamtlichen Helfer*innen. Die geb\u00fcrtige Frankfurterin hat beide Kulturen sprichw\u00f6rtlich in die Wiege gelegt bekommen: Ihre Mutter ist Japanerin, ihre Vater ist Deutscher. Die Vermittlung zwischen beiden Kulturen ist f\u00fcr Marina eine zentrale Herzensangelegenheit. Es wurde 2018 ins Leben gerufen, um der hiesigen Bev\u00f6lkerung ein m\u00f6glichst authentisches und breitgef\u00e4chertes Bild der Kultur aus dem Land der aufgehenden Sonne zu vermitteln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Von 2018 bis 2022 fand das Event (mit einer kurzen Unterbrechung wegen Corona) in Frankfurt statt. Mittlerweile ist Main Matsuri aber so sehr gewachsen, dass es auch Platzgr\u00fcnden ans B\u00fcsingpalais in Offenbach umgezogen ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Das Programm ist extrem vielf\u00e4ltig. Es kommen K\u00fcnstler*innen, die die traditionelle Seite des Landes zeigen \u2013 zum Beispiel durch Instrumentaldarbietungen mit der <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shakuhachi\">Shakuhachi<\/a> (einem japanische Bambusl\u00e4ngsfl\u00f6te) oder der <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Koto\">Koto<\/a> (eine Zither mit 13 Saiten). Andere repr\u00e4sentieren das moderne Japan, zum Beispiel durch Hip Hop Tanz. Au\u00dferdem gibt es Workshops, Panel Talks, interaktive Aktivit\u00e4ten, Shoppingangebote und nat\u00fcrlich eine gro\u00dfe Auswahl an japanischem Essen und Getr\u00e4nken. Mittlerweile ist Main Matsuri auch ein wichtiger Treffpunkt f\u00fcr Fans der japanischen Kultur geworden, wie zum Beispiel f\u00fcr die Cossplay-Community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Freiwillige vor!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Das Festival ist immer auf der Suche nach Menschen, die begeistert von Japan sind und das Orga-Team als Volunteers unterst\u00fctzten m\u00f6chten. Es wird in jedem Bereich Hilfe gebraucht, von der Betreuung der Artists \u00fcber die Kommunikation bis hin zum Getr\u00e4nkeverkauf auf dem Festivalgel\u00e4nde. Und man muss noch nicht einmal in Rhein-Main wohnen. Tats\u00e4chlich leben die Ehrenamtlichen in Deutschland und sogar auf der ganzen Welt verstreut. Du hast Interesse? Angefangen hat sie 2018 am Getr\u00e4nkestand. Mittlerweile k\u00fcmmert sie sich um den Social Media Auftritt. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Die Vermittlung zwischen der japanischen und der deutschen Kultur spielt in Marinas Leben eine gro\u00dfe Rolle, auch au\u00dferhalb von Main Matsuri. Und das ist kein Zufall: Die geb\u00fcrtige Frankfurterin ist die Tochter einer Japanerin und eines Deutschen. Marinas Mutter war es von Anfang an wichtig, ihren Kindern die Sprache, Traditionen, Feste und Kulinarik ihres Heimatlandes n\u00e4her zu bringen. Erst viel sp\u00e4ter wurde Marina bewusst, dass viele kleine allt\u00e4gliche Gewohnheiten in ihrer Familie aus Japan stammen und bei ihren Frankfurter Freunden zu Hause anders gehandhabt werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Die japanische Sprache lernt sie zun\u00e4chst in ihrem Elternhaus und einem w\u00f6chentlichen Kurs. In der Oberstufe am <a href=\"https:\/\/gg-ffm.de\/\">Goethe Gymnasium<\/a> kann sie schlie\u00dflich Japanisch als Wahl-Fach belegen. \u00dcber ihre Schule bekommt sie dann auch die M\u00f6glichkeit, f\u00fcr sechs Monate nach Japan zu gehen. Es gibt jedes Jahr einen Platz f\u00fcr genau eine Sch\u00fcler*in, um im Rahmen eines Sch\u00fcleraustauschs die japanische Partnerschule zu besuchen. Normalerweise sind die Pl\u00e4tze f\u00fcr Kursteilnehmer*innen bestimmt, die die Sprache noch nicht so gut beherrschen. Marinas Reise allerdings fand ein Jahr nach der Nuklearkatastrophe von Fukushima statt, sodass sich niemand anderes aus ihrer Klasse angemeldet hatte. Die Partnerschule befand sich jedoch in sicherer Entfernung von der Ungl\u00fccksst\u00e4tte und ihre Familie in Japan versicherte ihr, dass der Aufenthalt sicher sei. So bekam sie die M\u00f6glichkeit, als Sch\u00fclerin tief in die Kultur einzutauchen und ihre sprachlichen F\u00e4higkeiten weiter zu verbessern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Durch Instagram und Podcast das \u201ewahre\u201c Japan zeigen<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Marinas Sch\u00fcleraustausch in Japan best\u00e4rkt sie ma\u00dfgeblich in ihrem Wunsch, beide Kulturen einander n\u00e4herzubringen. In Deutschland wird sie damals immer wieder gefragt, wie es im ostasiatischen Land denn nun \u201ewirklich\u201c ist. Marina wei\u00df: Ein Bild sagt mehr als tausend Worte. Also startet sie den Instagram-Kanal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mointokio\/\">@mointokio<\/a> (\u201eMo in Tokio\u201c, nicht \u201eMoin Tokio\u201c \ud83d\ude05).&nbsp; Dort teilt sie gleicherma\u00dfen unterhaltsame wie informative Bilder und Videos aus dem japanischen Alltag, wie zum Beispiel die Rush Hour in der U-Bahn von Tokio, die so leise ist, dass man eine Stecknadel fallen h\u00f6ren k\u00f6nnte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besonders wichtig ist Marina dabei, neben den positiven auch die negativen Seiten zu zeigen. Ihr Eindruck ist, dass in Deutschland oft ein idealisiertes Bild von Japan vorherrscht. Ihr Anspruch ist es, aufzukl\u00e4ren und ein authentischeres Bild ihrer zweiten Heimat zu vermitteln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neben ihrem Instagram Kanal betreibt Marina gemeinsam mit ihrer japanischen Freundin Kaoru den Podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/4MsRBkI9cqr26AuvM1hXvO\">Maru \u2013 a German and Japanese Podcast<\/a> (Link zu Spotify; hier der Link zum Podcast auch bei <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/de\/podcast\/maru-a-german-japanese-podcast\/id1524072467\">Apple<\/a>). Kaoru lebt in Tokio, spricht Deutsch und f\u00fchlt sich der deutschen Kultur verbunden. In jeder Folge besprechen die beiden ein Thema aus dem Alltag, das sie besch\u00e4ftigt, von Nachhaltigkeit \u00fcber Fashion bis hin zum Job hunting oder ihren liebsten Fernsehsendungen. Das Besondere: Jede Episode erscheint sowohl auf Deutsch als auch auf Japanisch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Der Name des Podcasts hat eine doppelte Bedeutung: Erstens ist er die Kombination aus den Vornamen der beiden, MArina und KaoRU. Zweitens ins \u201eMaru\u201c das japanische Wort f\u00fcr Kreis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Die japanische Sprache \u2013 komplex und faszinierend<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Der schriftliche und der m\u00fcndliche Ausdruck sind im Japanischen zwei verschiedene Welten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Im Schriftlichen hat man es mit gleich drei Zeichensystemen zu tun: <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hiragana\">Hiragana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katakana\">Katagana<\/a> und <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kanji\">Kanji<\/a>. Alle drei Schriftarten werden in japanischen Texten kombiniert. Bei Hiragana und Katagana handelt es sich um Silbenschriften mit einer begrenzten Anzahl an Zeichen, die relativ einfach zu lernen sind. Die Kanjis hingehen sind Schriftzeichen, die aus dem Chinesischen abgeleitet worden sind. Hier gibt es unfassbar viele Variationen und Lesarten je nach Kontext.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Im M\u00fcndlichen gibt es viele unterschiedliche Formen der Ansprache, je nachdem, wer einem gegen\u00fcbersteht und welchen Platz in der gesellschaftlichen Hierarchie die andere Person einnimmt. Eine einmal gew\u00e4hlte Form zwischen zwei Personen \u00e4ndert sich normalerweise auch nicht, auch wenn man sich nach einiger Zeit besser kennenlernt. Wo man in Frankfurt also nach einiger Zeit vom \u201eSie\u201c zum \u201edu\u201c \u00fcbergehen w\u00fcrde, wird dieser Wechsel in Tokio nicht stattfinden \u2013 \u00fcbrigens weder im Beruf noch privat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ein wichtiger Faktor hierbei ist die <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senpai_and_k%C5%8Dhai\">Senpai- und Kohai-Kultur<\/a>. Senpai bezieht sich auf \u00e4ltere Mitglieder einer Gruppe, Kohai auf j\u00fcngere. In Japan lernen Kinder von Anfang an, dass Senpai anders angesprochen werden als Kohai. Dieser Umstand ist so fest verankert, dass es laut Marina sehr unwahrscheinlich ist, dass sie in japanischen B\u00fcros jemals die Duz-Kultur durchsetzen wird, wie es allm\u00e4hlich in Deutschland der Fall ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Auch, wenn es schwierig ist: Japanisch lernen lohnt sich, wenn man sich l\u00e4ngere Zeit dort aufhalten will, denn Englisch ist nicht sonderlich weit verbreitet. Angst vor Fehlern und Fettn\u00e4pfchen muss man aber nicht haben: Japaner*innen honorieren es sehr, wenn eine Besucher*in aus dem Ausland sich die M\u00fche macht, die Sprache zu lernen und helfen immer gerne weiter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kulturschocks und die Suche nach der goldenen Mitte<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Im Rahmen eines Praktikums hat Marina k\u00fcrzlich nochmal ein Dreivierteljahr in Tokio verbracht. Trotz ihrer engen Beziehung zu Japan gab es w\u00e4hrend ihres Aufenthalts nochmal den ein oder anderen Kulturschock. So war sie beispielsweise \u00fcberrascht, dass \u00fcber potenziell kontroverse Themen wie Umweltschutz oder Politik einfach nicht gesprochen wird. Die Harmonie in der Gemeinschaft hat hier Priorit\u00e4t. Marina war zun\u00e4chst irritiert, hat aber gleichzeitig den respektvollen Umgang miteinander sehr genossen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Im Westen l\u00e4sst sich genau das Gegenteil beobachten: Die Diskussionen zu allen m\u00f6glichen Themen sind sehr lebendig. Leider versch\u00e4rft sich gleichzeitig der Ton zunehmend, was dazu f\u00fchrt, dass die Fronten sich verh\u00e4rten. Wie sch\u00f6n w\u00e4re es, hier einen Mittelweg zwischen beiden Herangehensweisen zu finden. However, our Western ideas are often distorted or fragmented. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.main-matsuri.com\/\">Main Matsuri<\/a> remedies precisely this situation. Every year since 2018, this cultural festival has brought a piece of authentic Japan to the shores of the Main.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marina is one of the many volunteers organizing the festival. This Frankfurt native was literally born into both cultures: Her mother is Japanese, her father is German. Mediating between the two cultures is a matter close to Marina&#8217;s heart. It was launched in 2018 to give the local population a more authentic and wide-ranging impression of the culture from the Land of the Rising Sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2018 to 2022, the event was held in Frankfurt (with a brief interruption due to Corona). In the meantime, however, Main Matsuri has grown so much that it has now moved to the more spacious B\u00fcsingpalais in Offenbach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program is extremely diverse. There are artists who show the traditional side of the country &#8211; for example through instrumental performances with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shakuhachi\">shakuhachi<\/a> (a Japanese bamboo flute) or the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Koto_(instrument)\">koto<\/a> (a zither with 13 strings). Others represent modern Japan, for example through hip hop dance. There are also workshops, panel talks, interactive activities, shopping opportunities and, of course, a wide selection of Japanese food and drinks. Meanwhile, Main Matsuri has also become an important meeting place for fans of Japanese culture, such as the Cossplay community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Volunteers wanted!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival is always looking for people who are passionate about Japan and want to support the organizing team as volunteers. Help is needed in every area, from taking care of the artists to communication to selling drinks on the festival grounds. And you don&#8217;t even have to live in Rhein-Main. Contact the team either via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.main-matsuri.com\/kontakt\">website<\/a> or via one of the social media channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marina&#8217;s biography: mediation between Japan and Germany is close to her heart<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Marina has supported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.main-matsuri.com\/\">Main Matsuri<\/a> as a volunteer since the very beginning. She started in 2018 at the beverage stand. Since then, she moved on to the role of Social Media manager.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mediating between Japanese and German culture plays a big role in Marina&#8217;s life, also outside of Main Matsuri. And that&#8217;s no coincidence: the Frankfurt native is the daughter of a Japanese mother and a German father. From the very beginning, it was important to Marina&#8217;s mother to teach her children about the language, traditions, festivals and cuisine of her home country. It was only much later that Marina realized that many small everyday habits in her family originated in Japan and were handled differently at the homes of her friends in Frankfurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She first learns the Japanese language at her parents&#8216; house and in a weekly course. In her senior years at the <a href=\"https:\/\/gg-ffm.de\/\">Goethe Gymnasium<\/a>, she was finally able to take Japanese as an elective subject. Through her school, she eventually got the opportunity to go to Japan for six months. Every year there is a place for exactly one student to visit the Japanese partner school as part of a student exchange program. Normally, this spot is meant for students who do not yet have a good command of the language. However, Marina&#8217;s trip took place a year after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, so no one else from her class had signed up. Fortunately, the partner school was located a safe distance from the disaster site, and her family in Japan assured her that the stay was safe. This gave her the opportunity to immerse herself deeply in the culture as a student and further improve her language skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Showing the &#8222;real&#8220; Japan through Instagram and a podcast<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Marina&#8217;s student exchange in Japan significantly strengthened her desire to bring both cultures closer together. In Germany, she was asked time and again what it was &#8222;really like&#8220; in the East Asian country. Marina knows that a picture is worth a thousand words. So she starts the Instagram channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mointokio\/\">@mointokio<\/a> (&#8222;Mo in Tokyo&#8220;, not &#8222;Moin Tokio&#8220; \ud83d\ude05).&nbsp; There she shares equally entertaining and informative pictures and videos from everyday life in Japan, such as rush hour on the Tokyo subway, which is so quiet you could hear a pin drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is particularly important to Marina to show the negative sides as well as the positive ones. Her impression is that an idealized image of Japan often prevails in Germany. Her aim is to educate and convey a more authentic image of her second home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to her Instagram channel, Marina hosts the podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/4MsRBkI9cqr26AuvM1hXvO\">Maru &#8211; a German and Japanese Podcast<\/a> together with her Japanese friend Kaoru (the above link is for Spotify; here is the link to the podcast also on Apple). Kaoru lives in Tokyo, speaks German, and feels a connection to German culture. In each episode, the two discuss a topic from everyday life they care about, from sustainability to fashion to job hunting or their favorite TV shows. One very special feature: Each episode appears in both German and Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name of the podcast has a double meaning: First, it is the combination of the first names of the two, MArina and KaoRU. Secondly, &#8222;Maru&#8220; is the Japanese word for circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Japanese language &#8211; complex and fascinating<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Written and oral expression are two different worlds in Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In writing, one has to deal with three character systems: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hiragana\">Hiragana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katakana\">Katagana<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kanji\">Kanji<\/a>. All three character systems are combined in Japanese texts. Hiragana and Katagana are syllabic scripts with a limited number of characters that are relatively easy to learn. The Kanjis are characters that have been derived from Chinese, and there are an incredible number of variations and readings depending on the context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In oral speech, there are many different forms of address, depending on whom you\u2019re speaking to and what place in the social hierarchy the other person occupies. Once a form has been chosen between two people, it usually does not change, even if you get to know each other better after some time. So where in Frankfurt one would change from last-name-basis to first-name-basis after some time, this change will not take place in Tokyo &#8211; neither at work nor in private, by the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important factor here is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senpai_and_k%C5%8Dhai\">senpai and kohai culture<\/a>. Senpai refers to older members of a group, kohai to younger ones. In Japan, children learn from an early age that senpai are addressed differently than kohai. This fact is so ingrained that, according to Marina, it is very unlikely that she will ever see the first-name-culture take hold in Japanese offices, as it is gradually doing in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if it is difficult: learning Japanese is worthwhile if you want to stay there for a longer period of time, because English is not particularly widespread. But you don&#8217;t have to be afraid of making mistakes and putting your foot in your mouth: Japanese people appreciate it very much when a visitor from abroad makes the effort to learn the language and are always happy to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Culture shocks and the search for middle ground<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of an internship, Marina recently spent another three quarters of a year in Tokyo. Despite her close relationship with Japan, she was faced with one or two culture shocks during her stay. For example, she was surprised that potentially controversial topics such as environmental protection or politics are simply not discussed. Community harmony is the priority here. Marina was perplexed at first, but at the same time really enjoyed the respectful interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the West, the exact opposite is the case: Discussions on all kinds of topics are very lively. Unfortunately, at the same time the tone is becoming increasingly aggravated, which leads to the fronts hardening. How nice it would be to find a middle ground between the two approaches here. Marina makes an important contribution to this with her Instagram channel, her podcast and of course with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.main-matsuri.com\/\">Main Matsuri<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div
