Vorneweg: Hilfreiche Links

Yok Yok auf Instagram

YokYok

YokYokEden

Galerie „Kunst in anderen Räumen“ in Sachsenhausen

Instagram

Facebook

Unsere Gesprächsthemen:

00:00 – Nazims Anfangszitat: „Ein Kunde ist wie ein Familienmitglied. (…)

Also kaufte Nazim spontan ein Ticket.

English

Gude and Merhaba! Welcome to this episode of Global Village 069 – The world at home in Frankfurt.

Our central station district is known above all for its rough edges. But there is one place that has been attracting people from all over the city and beyond every day for many years: Yok Yok.

If you’ve never been there before, here’s a brief description of this Frankfurt phenomenon: this kiosk directly opposite the main train station offers over 200 types of beer on just a few square meters, as well as wine, snacks, soft drinks – in other words, everything you need for a fun night out. The façade and interior are decorated with hundreds of stickers, some simply funny, but many with a political message for diversity and democracy. It feels like half the city meets here every day, from bank board members to street sweepers to tourists from all over the world.

And in the middle of it all is my guest today, the owner of Yok Yok, who says of himself: „Every customer is like a family member to me“. Nazim Alemdar.

Nazim really is something like the kind sould of the central station district. I was delighted that he took the time to tell me about his life. About how he came from Ankara to Germany, first to Lower Saxony and finally to Frankfurt, and why helping others is the cornerstone of his philosophy of life. We talk about why xenophobia has no place in Frankfurt, why sustainability plays such an important role for him and how he manages to make Yok Yok a safe space for everyone who wants to spend a nice evening there.

Some helpful links upfront

Yok Yok on Instagram

YokYok

YokYokEden

Art Gallery “Kunst in anderen Räumen“ in Sachsenhausen

Instagram

Facebook

Our topics of conversation:

00:00 – Nazim’s opening quote: „A customer is like a family member. (…) I think my circle… they realize that I love them.“

04:07 – The country profile: Republic of Turkey

07:24 – Nazim is a Frankfurter through and through. This city is international, origin doesn’t matter. There is no room for xenophobia here.

08:19 – Nazim comes from Ankara. In 1976, he went to live with relatives in Zurich to learn German, but failed because he couldn’t speak Swiss German. He wanted to take the train back to Istanbul via the Balkans. He had to change trains in Milan. To pass the time, he called his cousin, who was already living in Germany at the time and told him he should come, too. So Nazim spontaneously bought a ticket.

11:26 – Nazim arrived in Lower Saxony in 1976, he didn’t need a visa back then. He actually only wanted to stay for a few weeks, but soon met his wife and was welcomed into their family like a son. Together they had two children. His family is his treasure.

13:10 – Nazim is happy to have stayed in Germany and wants to give something back to society. His motto: There are a thousand problems, a thousand questions and one answer: help.

14:00 – How did Nazim come to Frankfurt from Lower Saxony? Here’s a little background info: in the 1970s, the German government paid significantly more child benefit for children of Turkish immigrants living in Germany than for children in Turkey. So, many of them brought their families from Turkey in order to rent an apartment with the extra money. The government made no effort to integrate the so-called guest workers. They lived in very modest conditions and stayed in their bubble, which meant that they didn’t learn German, either.

17:57 – Nazim on experiences of racism: The guest worker families felt isolated, young people couldn’t get into the disco or cafés. He himself experienced this first-hand when he was out with his brother-in-law. Islam was also not recognized at the time, which led to the rise of many backyard mosques. The racism led to a lot of frustration and unhappiness in the families.

22:17 – Nazim founded a Turkish film distribution company in Frankfurt. The business model was a service for the Turkish community: a video distribution service for Turkish football matches, weddings and entertainment. There was no satellite television back then. People were very grateful. Nazim came to Frankfurt for this work because it was the central location for logistics in Germany.

26:48 – Nazim sent videotapes all over the world, from Sydney to New York. There were two mail centers in Frankfurt. He couldn’t have set up his business anywhere else in Germany.

29:21 – Nazim sometimes left music cassettes in his customers‘ stores at night so that they could sell them the very next day. The young people were eagerly waiting for the cassettes and posters! Being young is the same everywhere, the whole world is a village. There are good people and idiots everywhere, equally distributed.

32:31 – The video business was decreasing more and more. Pirated copies, in particular, were putting a huge strain on the business model. The same applied to the music cassette business.

34:47 – Nazim’s Turkish music market – the „TMM“ – had several locations in the station district over the years, most recently in Münchner Straße. Business was so bad at times that he could barely pay the rent. He then started selling soft drinks to have another source of income.

36:56 – The beginnings of Yok Yok: At first it was an Amazon online store for CDs, cassettes and games, among other things. Yok Yok is Turkish for „there’s no such thing as no such thing“. But when a customer from the immediate neighborhood ordered a CD online instead of coming into the store himself, Nazim knew: This business is dead.

39:05 – This is how Nazim changed the business model to Yok Yok Kiosk. He prioritized sustainability right from the start. This is also very important to him in his private life. He personally collects the cigarette butts and plastic waste in front of Yok Yok because he knows how harmful the waste is for animals on land and water. Humans are not alone in the world! It’s also a great way to get some fresh air.

42:17 – How did he come to sell beer as well as soft drinks? His family originally came from the Black Sea, but couldn’t stay there after the Ottoman-Russian War in the late 19th century.

43:00 – Nazim’s father came to Turkey from Poland before the Second World War to get married, but stayed there after the war broke out. He was a trained baker/pastry chef and spoke the old Polish „Lechitic“. He worked in an airplane factory as an interpreter between Polish and Turkish employees.

44:12 – An acquaintance of Nazim’s father told him that he should run a bar in Ankara. He then started selling beer. This inspired Nazim to do the same at Yok Yok. He learned from his father as a young boy: You have to adapt to the customers, not the other way around!

45:53 – Nazim loves his customers! For him, they are family members. They can tell if something comes from the heart or if someone is just putting on a show.

47:17 – He currently offers around 210 beers at Yok Yok. But his aim is to have over 250 in his range. Germany stands on 3 pillars: Football, cars and beer. He can’t contribute anything to the first two, but all the more to the last.

50:20 – Nazim’s plea against xenophobia: If the idiots win, he and many others will be gone. Then they’ll be very lonely here. Cultural diversity is a very valuable asset. Nazim loves Frankfurt’s culture. He contributes to it and feels like a Frankfurt citizen.

53:37 – Yok Yok is a safe space for everyone! Women, young people, everyone can feel comfortable and safe here. All guests are like sons and daughters to Nazim. If he notices that someone is harassing them, they are banned from the premises. Anyone who is already too drunk will not be given any more drinks or will be put in a cab and sent home. A friend of Nazim’s once secretly followed his teenage son when he went out because he was afraid for him. But when he saw his son going to Yok Yok, he was reassured.

56:22 – Nazim’s message to all those who are afraid of the station district: Don’t be! You can call him at any time for a free tour. The drug addicts keep to themselves and don’t attack others. Other neighborhoods in Frankfurt are more dangerous, no one will come to your aid there so quickly. About the drug addicts: We have to help them! Hence his motto: 1000 questions, 1000 problems, one answer: help.

Türkçe

Gude ve Merhaba!
