Gude und Dia Dhuit! In wenigen Wochen steht einer meiner liebsten Feiertage im Jahr an: der irische Nationalfeiertag St. Patrick’s Day. Am 17. März werden wie jedes Jahr Tausende Menschen in aller Welt Grün anziehen und sich auf den Weg ins nächste Irish Pub in ihrer Stadt machen, um sich von der irischen Gastfreundschaft, Herzlichkeit und Musik mitreißen zu lassen und ein paar Pints Guinness oder Kilkenny zu genießen. Und Frankfurt ist da natürlich keine Ausnahme.
Ich persönlich liebe die grüne Insel sehr, und um mehr Irland in Frankfurt zu entdecken, habe ich mir den wunderbaren Ray Madden ans Mikrofon geholt. Ray betreibt mit seinem Geschäftspartner Enda O’Connell gemeinsam das Irish Pub Bornheim, und wer schon einmal dort war, kann bestätigen: Dort reinzukommen fühlt sich an, als wäre man bei alten Freunden zu Gast.
Ray und ich sprechen über das großartige Angebot im Irish Pub Bornheim gegen Fernweh nach Irland: Von der Speisekarte und Getränkeauswahl über Konzerte bis hin zu den äußerst beliebten Pub Quizzes. 07:74 – Das Schöne am Irish Pub Bornheim: Es ist kein riesiges Pub, speziell im Winter sitzen die Leute eng beisammen. So kommen sie beim Sport-gucken oder beim Pub Quiz miteinander ins Gespräch. Man kann hier Freunde und Partner kennenlernen oder einen Job finden. Es kommen sowohl viele Menschen, die neu nach Frankfurt gezogen sind, als auch Locals. Grundsätzlich ist das Pub sehr multi-national aufgestellt.
09:33 – Das Gebäude in Bornheim Mitte, in dem sich das Irish Pub befindet, hat eine ereignisreiche Geschichte: Als Bornheim noch das „lustige Dorf“ war und vor den Stadttoren Frankfurts lag, gab es hier ein Bordell. Später befand sich hier ein Metzger, dann ein Fahrradladen und schließlich ein Schaufenster für Fahrrad Böttgen. Die McGowan Familie übernahm schließlich und eröffnete das Irish Pub im Sommer 1995.
11:34 – Als Ray das Pub 2007 übernahm, wurde gerade das Rauchverbot in Deutschland eingeführt. Damals macht er sich Sorgen, welche Auswirkungen das neue Gesetz auf sein Geschäft haben würde. Aber zum Glück hat es nicht geschadet, sondern sogar geholfen, ein neues Publikum reinzubringen. Und die Raucher*innen unter seinen Gästen gehen gerne raus für ihre Zigarette, z.B. in den Garten des Pubs, in dem es 120 Plätze gibt.
13:33 – Getränke und Essensangebot: Es gibt alle möglichen Biere gezapft und in der Flasche, nicht nur Guinness! Außerdem gibt es Whiskeys, Spirits, Cider und natürlich Ebbelwoi. Zu Essen gibt es eine große Auswahl an Burgern, Salaten und Comfort Food wie Chili con Carne. Ab und zu gibt es auch Specials, wie das irische Bacon und Kohl mit mehlig kochenden Kartoffeln. Am Wochenende gibt es außerdem Frühstück: Full Irish breakfast mit Irish Pudding (Achtung: Dabei handelt sich NICHT um Nachtisch, sondern um Blutwurst). Es ist genau wie das full English breakfast, nur besser. 😉
18:18 – Welche Sportarten werden im Pub übertragen? Natürlich Fußball, u.a. die Bundesliga, Premier League und die Serie A. Außerdem die irischen Sportarten Hurling und Gaelic Football. Es macht Spaß, nicht-Ir*innen die Regeln zu erklären! Man darf z.B. mit Händen und Füßen spielen. Außerdem Rugby Six Nations, was im Moment läuft. Das Finale findet am 16. März statt, dem Tag vor St. Patrick’s Day.
19:47 – Rays Pläne für St. Patrick’s Weekend: 15.3. Konzert, 16.3. Rugby Six Nations, 17.3. geöffnet ab 12 Uhr, es gibt Essen und Getränke drinnen und draußen (wenn das Wetter mitspielt), später live Musik. Jeder, der Guinness trinkt, bekommt ein Geschenk. Außerdem gibt es selbstgebackene grüne Muffins von Rays Frau und Schwiegermutter.
20:37 – Konzerte gibt es vor allem im Winter, immer freitagabends. Das nächste ist am 16. Februar, 23. Februar, 15. und 17. März. Alle Termine stehen auf der Website.
23:14 – Die Pub Quizzes im Irish Pub Bornheim sind super populär. Es gibt eine lange Warteliste von 4-6 Wochen. Darum unbedingt im Voraus per E-Mail reservieren, vor allem für größere Gruppen!
24:55 – Rays Geschichte: Er und sein Geschäftspartner Enda O’Connell übernahmen das Irish Pub Bornheim im März 2007 und eröffneten nach einer kurzen Renovierungsphase Ende April 2007. Davor leitete er die Bar im English Theatre Frankfurt. Doch obwohl das Team großartig war, wurde die Arbeit irgendwann zu eintönig. Einer seiner Geschäftskontakte, Doug Martin, eröffnete ihm schließlich die Möglichkeit, das Irish Pub Bornheim zu übernehmen. Nächtes Jahr feiert das Irish Pub Bornheim 30jähriges Jubiläum. Ray möchte die beiden Vorbesitzer einladen und das Ereignis auf jeden Fall feiern, entweder als eine Party oder eine Reihe von Events.
31:06 – Ray kam 1994 als 20jähriger nach Frankfurt. Frankfurt ist keine Weltstadt wie Paris oder Sydney, aber sie wächst einem ans Herz. Er ist hier vom Jungen zum Mann geworden. Das Irish Pub zu leiten, ist heute ein Traum, der für ihn wahr geworden ist. Er kommt aus dem Touristenstädtchen Blarney in Cork. Eine offensichtliche Option für ihn als jungen Mann wäre gewesen, in die USA auszuwandern. Aber ohne Green Card war es einfacher, nach Deutschland zu gehen. Und es hat den Vorteil, dass es näher an Irland dran ist als die Staaten oder Australien. Bis heute besucht Ray Irland immer noch regelmäßig.
34:48 – Mittlerweile sieht Ray Irland wie ein Tourist und macht ständig von allem Fotos, wenn er dort ist. Umgekehrt ist es aber auch so: Wenn Freunde zu Besuch kommen, entdeckt er Frankfurt und die Umgebung durch die Perspektive seiner Besucher neu.
37:14 –Gute Anlaufstellen, um Irland in Frankfurt zu entdecken, sind das Irish Tourism Board und das irische Konsulat (abgesehen von den Irish Pubs natürlich).
38:31 – Gaelic Football Association: Das Irish Pub Bornheim möchte das Zentrum in Frankfurt für diesen Sport sein. Das lokale Team gehört seit 2022 zu Eintracht Frankfurt und trainiert in Nied. Es gibt Männer-, Frauen und Kinder-Teams. Jeden November findet ein Irland Festival statt, für das das Irish Pub Bornheim die GAA Pokale sponsert. Letztes Jahr war Rays Familie an diesem Wochenende zu Besuch. Rays Vater Ted durfte Pokale überreichen und war sehr stolz.
44:00 – Was macht Irish Pubs so populär in der gesamten Welt? Es ist ein Tourismus Büro und ein Gemeindezentrum! Wer neu in der Stadt ist und Hilfe braucht, findet sie hier. Nicht nur vom Personal, sondern vor allem auch von den anderen Gästen. Dort wird Englisch gesprochen, es gibt Essen, Getränke, Sport und die Kultur von „Einhunderderttausendmal willkommen“. Beispiele: Als ich in La Paz, Bolivien und Ray in Prag gestrandet waren, haben wir jeweils im Irish Pub Hilfe bekommen.
48:38 – Viele Beziehungen und Freundschaften sind im Irish Pub Bornheim entstanden. Beispiele sind die ehemalige Mitarbeiterin aus Argentinien, die Kundin aus der Tschechischen Republik, Rays bester Freund Fabian und seine Ehefrau Julia. Es gab sogar schon einen Hochzeitsempfang im Irish Pub Bornheim! Also: Wenn ihr euch einsam fühlt und Bekanntschaften sucht – egal, ob romantisch oder freundschaftlich – vergesst die Apps und kommt zum Irish Pub.

Gude and Dia Dhuit! One of my favorite holidays of the year is coming up in a few weeks: Ireland’s national holiday, St. Patrick’s Day. On March 17th, as every year, thousands of people around the world will don the green and make their way to the nearest Irish pub in their city to be swept away by Irish hospitality, warmth and music and enjoy a few pints of Guinness or Kilkenny. And Frankfurt is of course no exception.
I personally love the Emerald Isle. To learn more about Ireland in Frankfurt, I invited the wonderful Ray Madden to join me for an interview. Ray runs the Irish Pub Bornheim together with his business partner Enda O’Connell, and anyone who has ever been there can confirm this: Walking in there feels like visiting old friends.
Ray and I talk about the great offerings at the Irish Pub Bornheim for anyone who’s missing Ireland: from the menu and drinks selection to concerts and the extremely popular pub quizzes. We also talk about sport and why Ray is especially committed to the Irish sport of Gaelic football in Frankfurt. 06:17 – Ray has been running the Irish Pub Bornheim as a family business together with his business partner Enda O’Connell since 2007. Their goal: to bring a piece of Ireland to Frankfurt. Irish pubs are like an Irish tourist office. For example, it helps a lot that English is spoken. Ray wants people to feel at home and stay for a long time.
07:74 – The nice thing about the Irish Pub Bornheim: it’s not a huge pub, especially in winter people sit closely together. They get to talk to each other while watching sports or playing a pub quiz. You can meet friends and partners here or find a job. Many people who have recently moved to Frankfurt come here, as well as locals. Basically, the pub is very multi-national.
09:33 – The building in Bornheim Mitte, where the Irish Pub is located, has an eventful history: when Bornheim was still the „funny village“ just outside the city gates of Frankfurt, this used to be a brothel. Later it was a butcher, then a bicycle store and finally a shop window for Fahrrad Böttgen. The McGowan family eventually took over and opened the Irish pub in the summer of 1995.
11:34 – When Ray took over the pub in 2007, the smoking ban had just been introduced in Germany. At the time, he was worried about the impact the new law would have on his business. But luckily it hasn’t done any harm, in fact it has helped bring in a new crowd. And the smokers among his guests like to go out for their cigarettes, for example in the garden of the pub, which has 120 seats.
13:33 – Drinks and food: There are all kinds of beers on tap and in bottles, not just Guinness! There are also whiskeys, spirits, cider and of course Ebbelwoi. To eat, there is a large selection of burgers, salads and comfort food such as chili con carne. From time to time there are also specials, such as Irish bacon and cabbage with floury potatoes. Breakfast is also served at the weekend: Full Irish breakfast with Irish pudding. It’s just like the full English breakfast, only better 😉
18:18 – Which sports are shown in the pub? Football/soccer, of course, including the Bundesliga, Premier League and Serie A. Also the Irish sports of hurling and Gaelic football. It’s fun to explain the rules to non-Irish people! You can play with your hands and feet, for example. Also Rugby Six Nations, which is on at the moment. The final is on March 16, the day before St. Patrick’s Day.
19:47 – Ray’s plans for St. Patrick’s Weekend: 15.3. concert, 16.3. Rugby Six Nations, 17.3. open from 12 noon, there will be food and drinks inside and outside (weather permitting), live music later. Everyone who drinks Guinness will receive a gift. There will also be homemade green muffins from Ray’s wife and mother-in-law.
20:37 – Concerts are mainly held in winter, always on Friday evenings. The next ones are on February 16, 23, 15 and 17. All dates can be found on the website.
23:14 – The pub quizzes at the Irish Pub Bornheim are super popular. There is a long waiting list of 4-6 weeks. So be sure to book in advance by email, especially for larger groups!
24:55 – Ray’s story: He and his business partner Enda O’Connell took over the Irish Pub Bornheim in March 2007 and opened at the end of April 2007 after a short renovation phase. Before that he ran the bar in the English Theatre Frankfurt. But although the team was great, the work eventually became too monotonous. One of his business contacts, Doug Martin, finally gave him the opportunity to take over the Irish Pub Bornheim. Next year, the Irish Pub Bornheim will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. Ray wants to invite the two previous owners and celebrate the event in any case, either as a party or a series of events.
31:06 – Ray came to Frankfurt in 1994 at the age of 20. Frankfurt is not a cosmopolitan city like Paris or Sydney, but it grows on you. He has grown from a boy to a man here. Today, running the Irish Pub is a dream come true for him. He comes from the tourist town of Blarney in Cork. An obvious option for him as a young man would have been to emigrate to the USA. But without a green card, it was easier to go to Germany. And it has the advantage of being closer to Ireland than the States or Australia. To this day, Ray still visits Ireland regularly.
34:48 – Ray now sees Ireland like a tourist and constantly takes photos of everything when he’s there. But the reverse is also true: when friends come to visit, he rediscovers Frankfurt and the surrounding area through the perspective of his visitors.
37:14 – Good places to go to discover Ireland in Frankfurt are the Irish Tourism Board and the Irish Consulate (apart from the Irish pubs, of course).
38:31 – Gaelic Football Association: The Irish Pub Bornheim wants to be the center in Frankfurt for this sport. The local team has been part of Eintracht Frankfurt since 2022 and trains in Nied. There are men’s, women’s and children’s teams. Every November there is an Ireland Festival, for which the Irish Pub Bornheim sponsors the GAA trophies. Last year, Ray’s family visited this weekend. Ray’s father Ted was there to present trophies and was very proud.
44:00 – What makes Irish pubs so popular around the world? It’s a tourism office and a community center! If you’re new in town and need help, you’ll find it here. Not only from the staff, but above all from the other guests. English is spoken there, there is food, drinks, sports and the culture of „One hundred thousand welcomes“. Examples: When I was stranded in La Paz, Bolivia and Ray was stranded in Prague, we both got help in the Irish pub.
