Slowenien ist ein kleines Land, über dessen natürliche Schönheit, reichhaltige Kultur und faszinierende Sprache nicht allzu viele Menschen Bescheid wissen.

Zum Glück gibt es Sava e.V. Sava e.V. ist der slowenische Bildungs- und Kulturverein in Frankfurt mit Sitz in Fechenheim. Hinter einer unscheinbaren Hausfassade verbirgt sich ein Stück echtes Slowenien, das seine Türen gerne für alle Frankfurter*innen öffnet, nicht nur für solche mit slowenischen Wurzeln. Von Sprachkursen über Koch-Events bis hin zu Kulturveranstaltungen gibt es das ganze Jahr über ein liebevoll organisiertes Programm.

Eins der Herzstücke von Sava e.V. ist die kleine Bibliothek mit slowenischen Büchern. Denn Slowen*innen sind wahre Lese-Ratten: Obwohl nur etwa 2,5 Millionen Menschen die Sprache sprechen, werden jedes Jahr sage und schreibe 4.000 Bücher veröffentlicht. Da passt es perfekt, dass Slowenien dieses Jahr der Ehrengast der Frankfurter Buchmesse ist (18. – 22.10.23).

Ich habe mich mit Tanja Geike aus dem Vorstand von Sava e.V. unterhalten über die slowenische Liebe zur Literatur, Gastfreundschaft, therapeutische Kaffeepausen und über ihren ganz persönlichen Weg nach Frankfurt.

Über Sava e.V.

Sava e.V. ist der slowenische Bildungs- und Kulturverein in Frankfurt mit Sitz in Fechenheim. Er wurde vor über 50 Jahren gegründet, um der slowenischen Community am Main eine Anlaufstelle zu geben, um zusammenzukommen, Bräuche zu pflegen und vor allem, um die Sprache zu lernen bzw. aufzufrischen. 

Dabei ist der Verein offen für alle Frankfurter*innen, die ein Interesse an Slowenien haben. Ein direkter Bezug zum Land ist nicht nötig, um bei den Veranstaltungen mitzumachen. Es gibt auch keine festen Mitgliedsbeiträge, wobei Spenden aber natürlich immer willkommen sind. Ansonsten wird der Verein von der slowenischen Regierung finanziert.

Slowenische Unternehmen in Frankfurt können auf der Website von Sava e.V. kostenlos Werbung schalten. Das hilft ebenfalls beim Vernetzen innerhalb der Stadt.

Sava e.V. bietet das ganze Jahr hindurch ein buntes Programm für alle, die sich Slowenien verbunden fühlen. Das Herzstück ist der Sprachunterricht, der jeden Samstag in den Räumlichkeiten in Fechenheim stattfindet und sich an jede*n richtet, egal ob Anfänger*in oder Fortgeschrittene*r. Abgesehen davon gibt es Feste, Ausflüge, Koch-Events… das Angebot ist groß.

Ehrengast der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2023

Dieses Jahr hat Sava e.V. einen besonders guten Grund für seine rege Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. Denn Slowenien ist in diesem Jahr der Ehrengast der Frankfurter Buchmesse, der weltweit größten und wichtigsten Buchmesse überhaupt.

Es gibt ein buntes Programm im Spätsommer und Herbst, von Ausstellungen, Podiumsdiskussionen, Vorträgen und einer Film-Retrospektive im Deutschen Filmmuseum bis hin zu – natürlich – Lesungen.

Liebe auf slowenische Art: Sprache, Natur und BÜCHER

Slowenisch ist eine süd-slawische Sprache. Sie ist dabei nicht zu verwechseln mit Serbokroatisch. Besonders spannend. Slowenisch ist die einzige Sprache in der EU, die heute noch die Verbform „Dual“ nutzt, wenn ausgedrückt werden soll, dass genau zwei Personen einer Tätigkeit nachgehen.

Allein dieser Umstand zeigt: Zweisamkeit ist in Slowenien besonders wichtig. Generell spielt die Liebe eine große Rolle. Das sieht man auch an den Namen der Hauptstadt und des Landes selbst: Die Silbe „Ljubl“ in Ljubljana bedeutet übersetzt Liebe. Und der Slogan des slowenischen Tourismusbüros lautet passenderweise „I feel sLOVEnia“.

Diese Liebe gilt nicht nur den Mitmenschen, sondern auch der Natur. Daher setzen sich die Slowen*innen sehr für ökologische Nachhaltigkeit ein. Diese Verbindung zum Draußen prägt sie von Kindesbeinen an. Auch Tanja war schon als kleines Mädchen mit ihrem Vater häufig im Wald zum Pilze sammeln.

Slowenien hat außerdem eine ganz besondere Beziehung zur Literatur. Es ist das Land mit der „dichtesten Dichte an Dichtern“. Laut Tanja ist dies zu einem großen Teil dem Bildungssystem zu verdanken. Kinder schreiben von klein auf eigene Gedichte, Artikel und Essays und nehmen an Literatur- und Lesewettbewerben teil. Tanja hat sogar selbst als junges Mädchen erfolgreich bei Lyrikwettbewerben mitgemacht und Artikel für Zeitschriften verfasst.

Die Liebe der Slowen*innen zu Büchern lässt sich sogar beziffern: Pro Jahr werden in dem kleinen Land sage und schreibe 4.000 Bücher veröffentlicht, inklusive Übersetzungen. Dazu zählen über 300 Gedichtbände, 500 Romane und 900 Kinderbücher. Allein diese Zahl zeigt, wie wichtig die Bildung der Kinder ist.

Bücher sind in Slowenien verhältnismäßig teuer: Ein durchschnittliches Exemplar kostet fast 22 Euro. Das liegt an der geringen Auflagezahl. Trotzdem ist die Bevölkerung „ganz, ganz verliebt in Bücher“, wie Tanja sagt.

Die wichtigste Aufgabe des Vereins: Erhalt der Sprache und der Gemeinschaft

Slowenisch wird weltweit von nur etwa 2,5Millionen Menschen gesprochen. Tanja weiß: „Die Sprache stirbt aus, wenn wir sie nicht pflegen.“ Darum sehen die Mitglieder von Sava e.V. den wöchentlichen Slowenisch-Unterricht als ihre wichtigste Aufgabe. Die wichtigste Zielgruppe dabei sind die Kinder.

Gleichzeitig kümmert sich der Verein besonders um die Alten, die zum Teil vor Jahrzehnten Slowenien verlassen haben und die den Bezug zu ihrer Muttersprache nicht verlieren wollen. Hier geht es um mehr als nur um die Sprache. Es geht um Gemeinschaft und darum, niemanden alleine zu lassen.

Ein besonderer Service von Sava e.V.: Ein paarmal im Jahr kommt der slowenische Konsul aus Berlin nach Frankfurt, damit die Mitglieder der slowenischen Community ihre Anliegen vorbringen können. Dies ist ebenfalls für die Älteren besonders wichtig, da sie die weite Reise in die Hauptstadt nicht auf sich nehmen müssen.

Tanjas Geschichte

Tanja selbst ist vor 16 Jahren aus Slowenien durch Zufall nach Frankfurt gekommen. Ihr Mann hat slowenische und deutsche Wurzeln und lebte damals in Berlin. Der ursprüngliche Plan sah vor, dass Tanja zu ihm in die Hauptstadt ziehen sollte. Sie war zu diesem Zeitpunkt in Slowenien bei einer Bank angestellt, die ihr anbot, zu einem Tochterunternehmen nach Frankfurt zu wechseln. Ihr Mann war ebenfalls einverstanden, von der Spree an den Main zu ziehen.

So kam es, dass die Eheleute Geike und ihr gemeinsamer Sohn ihren Weg nach Frankfurt fanden. Der Kleine war damals vier Jahre alt und wuchs zweisprachig auf. Bald wollte er jedoch kein Slowenisch mehr sprechen und sich dem deutschen Umfeld anpassen – eine Herausforderung, die viele Eltern bei einer bilingualen Erziehung kennen. Um sich hier Unterstützung zu holen, schickte Tanja ihn zum Samstagsunterricht bei Sava e.V. So kam es, dass sie mit dem Verein in Kontakt kam und schließlich zu einem Vorstandsmitglied wurde.

Kulturschocks: triste Garderobe und getrennte Rechnungen im Restaurant

Tanja erinnert sich gut an ihren ersten Arbeitstag in Frankfurt. Als ihr Mann sie mit dem Auto auf der Kaiserstraße absetze, war sie überrascht von der eintönigen, dunklen Kleidung der anderen Leute. Aus Slowenien war sie eine farbenfrohere Aufmachung gewohnt. Zum Glück hat sich dieses triste Bild in den letzten anderthalb Jahrzehnten geändert: „Frankfurt ist bunter geworden.“

Ein weiterer Kulturschock: der erste Restaurantbesuch mit ihren Kolleg*innen. Tanja traute ihren Augen kaum, als am Ende des Abends die Rechnung haargenau aufgeteilt wurde. In Slowenien würde so etwas als Beleidigung gelten. Dort ist es üblich, dass eine Person den Rest der Gruppe einlädt.

Slowenische Kulinarik

Generell spielt Essen in Slowenien eine wichtige Rolle. Das Land liegt an der Schnittstelle zwischen Österreich, Ungarn und Italien. Dementsprechend ist die Küche von all diesen Regionen beeinflusst. Das Wichtigste: Die Zutaten müssen frisch sein! Viele Slowen*innen ernten Obst und Gemüse aus dem eigenen Garten und verarbeiten es zu köstlichen Speisen. Tanjas Favorit: Apfelstrudel nach dem Rezept ihrer Mama.

Therapeutische Kaffeepausen

Mindestens genauso wichtig wie das Essen ist in Slowenien der Kaffee. Von morgens bis abends ist immer Zeit für einen Plausch mit den Nachbar*innen bei einer dampfenden Tasse. Die Zubereitungsart des Kaffees ist dabei Nebensache: Hauptsache, man verbringt Zeit zusammen und kann sich austauschen. Diese Gespräche wirken laut Tanja geradezu wie eine Therapie. Übrigens ist dies auch der Grund, warum sich Starbucks und Co. noch nicht in Slowenien durchsetzen konnten: Die Menschen nehmen sich einfach zu viel Zeit, ihren Kaffee zu genießen, als das eine schnelle „To Go“-Kultur hier funktionieren würde.

Bookfair Special with Tanja Geike from Sava e.V. – why Slovenia is the land of love

Slovenia is a small country. And quite frankly, not enough people know about its natural beauty, rich culture and fascinating language.

Good thing there is Sava e.V. Sava e.V. is the Slovenian educational and cultural association in Frankfurt, located in Fechenheim. Behind an inconspicuous house façade hides a piece of real Slovenia, which gladly opens its doors to all Frankfurt residents, not only those with Slovenian roots. From language courses to cooking events to cultural get-togethers, there is a lovingly organized program throughout the year.

One of the centerpieces of Sava e.V. is the small library with Slovenian books. Although only about 2.5 million people speak the language, no less than 4,000 books are published every year (including translations). So it’s only fitting that Slovenia is this year’s Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair (18-22 October 2023).

I talked to Tanja Geike from the board of Sava e.V. about the Slovenian love of literature, hospitality, therapeutic coffee breaks, and her own personal journey to Frankfurt.

About Sava e.V.

Sava e.V. is the Slovenian educational and cultural association in Frankfurt, located in Fechenheim. It was founded more than 50 years ago to give the Slovenian community here a place to come together, to cultivate customs and, above all, to learn or refresh the language. 

The association is open to all Frankfurt residents who have an interest in Slovenia. A direct connection to the country is not required to participate in the events. There are also no fixed membership fees, although donations are of course always welcome. Otherwise, the association is funded by the Slovenian government.

Slovenian companies in Frankfurt can advertise on the Sava e.V. website free of charge. This also helps networking within the city.

Sava e.V. offers a varied program throughout the year for everyone who feels connected to Slovenia. The centerpiece is the language classes, which take place every Saturday at the Fechenheim premises and are aimed at all levels, whether beginner or advanced. Apart from that, there are parties, excursions, cooking events… the offer is vast.

Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2023

This year, Sava e.V. has a particularly good reason for its lively public relations work. Slovenia is this year’s Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the largest and most important book fair in the world.

There is a varied program in late summer and fall, from exhibitions, panel discussions, lectures and a film retrospective at the German Film Museum to – of course – readings.

Love the Slovenian way: language, nature and BOOKS

Slovenian is a South Slavic language. It is not to be confused with Serbo-Croatian. Fun fact: Slovenian is the only language in the EU that still uses the “dual” verb form when expressing that exactly two people are engaged in an activity.

This fact alone shows: Togetherness is particularly important in Slovenia. In general, love plays a major role. This can also be seen in the names of the capital and the country itself: The syllable „Ljubl“ in Ljubljana translates as love. And the slogan of the Slovenian tourist office fittingly is „I feel sLOVEnia„.

This love is not only directed at fellow human beings, but also at nature. That’s why Slovenians are very committed to ecological sustainability. This connection to the outdoors has shaped them since childhood. Even as a little girl, Tanja often went mushroom picking in the forest with her father.

Slovenia also has a very special relationship with literature. It is the country with the „hightes density of poets”. According to Tanja, this is largely thanks to the education system. Children write their own poems, articles and essays from an early age and participate in literary and reading competitions. Tanja even participated successfully in poetry competitions as a young girl and wrote articles for magazines.

The Slovenians‘ love of books can also be quantified: no less than 4,000 books are published in this small country every year, including translations. These include over 300 volumes of poetry, 500 novels and 900 children’s books. This figure alone shows how important the education of children is.

Books are relatively expensive in Slovenia: an average copy costs almost 22 euros. This is due to the small number of prints. Nevertheless, the population is „completely in love with books,“ as Tanja puts it.

The most important mission of the association: preserving the language and the community

Slovenian is spoken by only about 2.5 million people worldwide. Tanja knows that „the language will die out if we don’t take care of it.“ That is why the members of Sava e.V. see weekly Slovenian lessons as their most important task. The most important target group here are the children.

At the same time, the association takes special care of the elderly, some of whom left Slovenia decades ago and do not want to lose touch with their mother tongue. This is about more than just the language. It is about community and not leaving anyone alone.

A special service of Sava e.V.: A couple of times a year the Slovenian consul from Berlin comes to Frankfurt so that the members of the Slovenian community can present their concerns. This is also particularly important for the elderly, as they do not have to make the long journey to the capital.

Tanja’s story

Tanja herself came to Frankfurt from Slovenia by chance 16 years ago. Her husband has Slovenian and German roots and was living in Berlin at the time. The original plan was for Tanja to join him in the capital. At the time, she was employed by a bank in Slovenia, which offered her the opportunity to move to a subsidiary in Frankfurt. Her husband also agreed to move from the Spree to the Main.

And so it was that the two of them found their way to Frankfurt together with their son. The little boy was four years old at the time and grew up bilingual. Soon, however, he no longer wanted to speak Slovenian and wanted to adapt to the German environment – a challenge that many parents are familiar with when it comes to bilingual education. To get support here, Tanja sent him to Saturday classes at Sava e.V. That’s how she came into contact with the association and eventually became a board member.

Culture shocks: drab wardrobe and splitting the restaurant bill

Tanja remembers her first day at work in Frankfurt well. When her husband dropped her off in the car on Kaiserstraße, she was surprised by the drab, dark clothes of the other people. From Slovenia, she was used to a more vibrant outfit. Fortunately, this drab image has changed in the last decade and a half: „Frankfurt has become more colorful.“

Another culture shock: the first visit to a restaurant with her colleagues. Tanja could hardly believe her eyes when, at the end of the evening, the bill was split precisely. In Slovenia, such a thing would be considered an insult. There, it is customary for one person to invite the rest of the group.

Slovenian Cuisine

In general, food plays an important role in Slovenia. The country lies at the crossroads of Austria, Hungary and Italy. Accordingly, the cuisine is influenced by all these regions. The most important thing: the ingredients must be fresh! Many Slovenians harvest fruits and vegetables from their own gardens and turn them into delicious dishes. Tanja’s favorite: apple strudel made from her mom’s recipe.

Therapeutic coffee breaks

Coffee is at least as important as food in Slovenia. From morning to night, there is always time for a chat with the neighbors over a steaming cup. The way the coffee is made is irrelevant: the main thing is to spend time together and exchange ideas. According to Tanja, these conversations have a therapeutic effect. Incidentally, this is also the reason why Starbucks and Co. have not yet been able to establish themselves in Slovenia: People simply take too much time to enjoy their coffee for a quick „to go“ culture to work here.

Slovenija je majhna država. In odkrito povedano, premalo ljudi ve za njene naravne lepote, bogato kulturo in zanimiv jezik.

Še dobro, da obstaja Sava e.V. Sava e.V. je slovensko izobraževalno in kulturno društvo v Frankfurtu s sedežem v Fechenheimu. Za neopazno hišno fasado se skriva košček prave Slovenije, ki z veseljem odpira svoja vrata vsem prebivalcem Frankfurta, ne le tistim s slovenskimi koreninami. Od jezikovnih tečajev do kuharskih prireditev in kulturnih druženj, vse leto je na voljo ljubeče organiziran program.

Ena od osrednjih točk Sava e.V. je majhna knjižnica s slovenskimi knjigami. Čeprav jezik govori le okoli 2,5 milijona ljudi, vsako leto izide nič manj kot 4.000 knjig (vključno s prevodi). Zato je prav, da je Slovenija letošnja častna gostja frankfurtskega knjižnega sejma (18. – 22.10.23).

Sava e.V. je slovensko izobraževalno in kulturno društvo v Frankfurtu s sedežem v Fechenheimu. Ustanovljeno je bilo pred več kot 50 leti, da bi tukajšnji slovenski skupnosti omogočilo druženje, negovanje običajev in predvsem učenje ali osvežitev jezika. 

Društvo je odprto za vse prebivalce Frankfurta, ki jih zanima Slovenija. Za udeležbo na dogodkih ni potrebna neposredna povezava z državo. Prav tako ni določenih članarin, čeprav so donacije seveda vedno dobrodošle. Sicer pa društvo financira slovenska vlada.

Društvo Sava e.V. skozi vse leto ponuja pester program za vse, ki se čutijo povezane s Slovenijo. Osrednji del so jezikovni tečaji, ki potekajo vsako soboto v prostorih v Fechenheimu in so namenjeni vsem ravnem, tako začetnikom kot naprednim. Poleg tega so na voljo zabave, izleti, kulinarični dogodki … ponudba je bogata.

Družba Sava e.V. ima letos še posebej dober razlog za živahno delo na področju odnosov z javnostmi. Slovenija je letos častna gostja na frankfurtskem knjižnem sejmu, največjem in najpomembnejšem knjižnem sejmu na svetu.

Pozno poleti in jeseni je na voljo pester program, od razstav, okroglih miz, predavanj in filmske retrospektive v Nemškem filmskem muzeju do – seveda – branj.

Ljubezen po slovensko: jezik, narava in knjige

Slovenščina je južnoslovanski jezik. Ne smemo ga zamenjevati s srbohrvaščino. Zabavno dejstvo: slovenščina je edini jezik v EU, ki še vedno uporablja „dvojinsko“ glagolsko obliko, kadar izraža, da se z neko dejavnostjo ukvarjata točno dve osebi.

Že samo to dejstvo kaže: V Sloveniji je povezanost še posebej pomembna. Na splošno ima ljubezen pomembno vlogo. To je razvidno tudi iz imen glavnega mesta in same države: V Ljubljani zlog „Ljubl“ pomeni ljubezen. Slogan slovenskega turističnega urada pa se primerno glasi „I feel sLOVEnia„.

Ta ljubezen pa ni usmerjena le v soljudi, temveč tudi v naravo. Zato smo Slovenci zelo predani ekološki trajnosti. Ta povezanost z naravo jih oblikuje že od otroštva. Že kot majhna deklica je Tanja z očetom pogosto hodila v gozd po gobe.

Slovenija ima prav tako zelo poseben odnos do literature. Je država z „največjo gostoto pesnikov“. Tanja meni, da je za to v veliki meri zaslužen izobraževalni sistem. Otroci že od malih nog pišejo svoje pesmi, članke in eseje ter sodelujejo na literarnih in bralnih tekmovanjih. Tanja je kot mlado dekle celo uspešno sodelovala na pesniških tekmovanjih in pisala članke za revije.

Ljubezen Slovencev do knjig je mogoče tudi količinsko ovrednotiti: vsako leto v tej majhni državi izide najmanj 4.000 knjig, vključno s prevodi. Med njimi je več kot 300 pesniških zbirk, 500 romanov in 900 knjig za otroke. Že ta številka kaže, kako pomembno je izobraževanje otrok.

Knjige so v Sloveniji razmeroma drage: povprečen izvod stane skoraj 22 evrov. To je posledica majhnega števila izvodov. Kljub temu je prebivalstvo „popolnoma zaljubljeno v knjige“, kot pravi Tanja.

Najpomembnejše poslanstvo združenja: ohranjanje jezika in skupnosti

Slovenščino govori le približno 2,5 milijona ljudi na svetu. Tanja se zaveda, da bo „jezik izumrl, če zanj ne bomo poskrbeli“. Zato člani društva Sava e.V. kot svojo najpomembnejšo nalogo vidijo tedenske ure slovenščine. Najpomembnejša ciljna skupina pri tem so otroci.

Hkrati društvo posebej skrbi za starejše, med katerimi so nekateri že pred desetletji zapustili Slovenijo in ne želijo izgubiti stika z maternim jezikom. Pri tem ne gre le za jezik. Gre za skupnost in za to, da nikogar ne pustimo samega.

Posebna storitev društva Sava e.V.: Nekajkrat na leto pride v Frankfurt slovenski konzul iz Berlina, da lahko člani slovenske skupnosti predstavijo svoje težave. To je posebej pomembno tudi za starejše, saj jim ni treba na dolgo pot v prestolnico.

Tanjina zgodba

Tanja je pred 16 leti po naključju prišla iz Slovenije v Frankfurt. Njen mož ima slovenske in nemške korenine in je takrat živel v Berlinu. Prvotni načrt je bil, da se mu Tanja pridruži v prestolnici. Takrat je bila zaposlena v banki v Sloveniji, ki ji je ponudila možnost, da se preseli v podružnico v Frankfurtu. Tudi njen mož se je strinjal, da se iz reke Spree preseli na Majno.

Tako sta se skupaj s sinom znašla v Frankfurtu. Deček je bil takrat star štiri leta in je odraščal dvojezično. Kmalu pa ni hotel več govoriti slovensko in se je želel prilagoditi nemškemu okolju – izziv, ki ga pri dvojezični vzgoji poznajo številni starši. Da bi tu dobila podporo, ga je Tanja poslala na sobotne tečaje v društvo Sava e.V. Tako je prišla v stik z društvom in sčasoma postala članica upravnega odbora.

Kulturni šok: siva garderoba in delitev računa v restavraciji

Tanja se dobro spominja svojega prvega delovnega dne v Frankfurtu. Ko jo je mož odložil v avtomobilu na Kaiserstraße, jo je presenetila siva, temna oblačila drugih ljudi. Iz Slovenije je bila namreč vajena bolj živahnih oblačil. Na srečo se je ta siva podoba v zadnjem desetletju in pol spremenila: „Frankfurt je postal bolj barvit.“

Še en kulturni šok: prvi obisk restavracije z njenimi sodelavci. Tanja ni mogla verjeti svojim očem, ko so ob koncu večera natančno razdelili račun. V Sloveniji bi kaj takega veljalo za žalitev. Tam je v navadi, da ena oseba povabi preostale člane skupine.

Slovenska kuhinja

Hrana ima v Sloveniji na splošno pomembno vlogo. Država leži na stičišču Avstrije, Madžarske in Italije. Zato na njeno kuhinjo vplivajo vse te regije. Najpomembnejša stvar: sestavine morajo biti sveže! Veliko Slovencev nabira sadje in zelenjavo z lastnih vrtov in iz njih pripravlja okusne jedi. Tanjin najljubši: jabolčni štrudelj po receptu njene mame.

Terapevtski odmori za kavo

Kava je v Sloveniji vsaj tako pomembna kot hrana. Od jutra do večera se vedno najde čas za klepet s sosedi ob parni skodelici. Način priprave kave je nepomemben: glavno je, da skupaj preživimo čas in izmenjamo ideje. Tanja meni, da imajo ti pogovori terapevtski učinek. Mimogrede, to je tudi razlog, zakaj se Starbucks in Co. še niso uspeli uveljaviti v Sloveniji: Ljudje si preprosto vzamejo preveč časa za uživanje v kavi, da bi hitra kultura „to go“ tu delovala.
