Fernanda Campos-Giuga, geboren und aufgewachsen in Mexiko Stadt, lebt seit 2017 in Frankfurt. Ihre Beziehung zu Deutschland hat aber schon fast zwei Jahrzehnte früher angefangen. Mit acht Jahren schickten ihren Eltern sie und ihre Geschwister auf eine deutsche Schule in Mexiko Stadt. Im Teenager-Alter folgten zwei Deutschland-Aufenthalte als Gastschülerin. Beide Erfahrungen prägten Fernanda sehr. Für sie war klar, dass sie ihren Lebensmittelpunkt so schnell wie möglich in die Bundesrepublik verlegen würde. Dass sie schließlich ausgerechnet nach Frankfurt gekommen ist, verdankt sie „göttlichen Zufällen“. Was genau dahinter steckt, erzählt Fernanda im Gespräch.

Außerdem berichtet Fernanda von Kulturschockerlebnissen der nackten Art, warum man in der Öffentlichkeit in Frankfurt selbst in einer Fremdsprache keine intimen Gespräche führen sollte und warum mehr mexikanische Mentalität in Frankfurt eine Bereicherung für uns alle ist.

Göttliche Zufälle

Fernandas Philosophie im Leben ist, dass es keine Zufälle gibt, sondern nur „Diosidencias“. Das Wort setzt sich zusammen aus dem spanischen „dios“ (=Gott) und „coincidencias“ (=Zufälle). Das heißt: Die Begebenheiten in Fernandas Leben waren und sind nicht willkürlich, sondern haben sie gezielt an den Ort geführt, an dem sie heute ist.

Die deutsche Schule in Mexiko

Fernanda hat schon seit ihrer Kindheit eine besondere Beziehung zu Deutschland. Ihre Eltern wollten, dass sie und ihre vier Geschwister eine internationale Schule in Mexiko Stadt besuchen und zweisprachig aufwachsen. Um die richtige Institution zu finden, schickten Mama und Papa Campos ihre Kinder u.a. auf die japanische, die französische und eben die deutsche Schule. Am besten gefallen hat allen Kindern – und auch den Eltern – die deutsche Schule: das Colegio Alemàn Alexander von Humboldt.

So fing Fernanda mit 8 Jahren an, Deutsch zu lernen. Der komplette Unterricht war auf Deutsch, bis auf mexikanische Geschichte und Spanisch.

Als Gastschülerin in Deutschland: Eine prägende Erfahrung

Mit 12 Jahren ging Fernanda zum ersten Mal als Gastschülerin nach Deutschland: zur Familie von Thun in Grimma bei Leipzig. Sie beschreibt diese Zeit als eine wunderbare Erfahrung, die sehr zu ihrer Persönlichkeitsentwicklung beigetragen hat. War Fernanda mit 12 Jahren schon selbstbewusst, dass sie alleine ins Ausland gegangen ist? Nein! Ihr Selbstbewusstsein hat sich Stück für Stück im Umgang mit ihrer Gastfamilie und ihren Mitschüler*innen entwickelt. Und sie hat gelernt, was für sie wichtig ist im Leben: vor allem zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen.

Ein zweiter Deutschland-Aufenthalt folgte, als Fernanda in der 11. Klasse war. Dieses Mal lebte sie ein Jahr lang in Hamburg Harburg und kam unter anderem in den Genuss von Sylt, dem Fischmarkt… und natürlich der Reeperbahn.

Am liebsten wäre Fernanda nach ihrer Zeit in Grimma und nach ihrer Zeit in Hamburg gleich in Deutschland geblieben. Aber noch war es zu früh für ihre Eltern, ihr diesen großen Schritt zu erlauben.

Body Positivity made in Germany

Einen Kulturschock der nackten Art bekam Fernanda, als sie zum ersten Mal mit Freund*innen einen See bei Grimma besuchte. Dort gab es, wie oft üblich, einen FKK-Bereich. Die junge Fernanda konnte ihren Augen kaum trauen, als plötzlich ein älterer Herr splitterfasernackt vor ihr stand. Und sie später eine ganze Familie komplett ohne Kleidung beim Grillen sah. 😲

Fernanda hat die Theorie, dass FKK in der deutschen Kultur so verbreitet ist, weil der menschliche Körper als etwas Natürliches gesehen wird und eher so akzeptiert wird, wie er ist. In Mexiko, erzählt sie, ist es hingegen üblicher, mit plastischer Chirurgie nachzuhelfen.

Typisch mexikanisches Essen – NOT!

Die von Thuns wollten Fernandas Herz mit Chili con Carne erobern. Was sie nicht wussten: Hierbei handelt es sich überhaupt nicht um ein mexikanisches Gericht. Als Mama von Thun das Essen servierte, fragte Fernanda nur: „Was ist das?“ 😂

Das Gleiche gilt übrigens für Burritos. Chili con Carne und Burritos sind Tex Mex Gerichte, die mexikanische Gastronom*innen für ihre US-amerikanische Kundschaft in Texas entwickelt haben, nachdem Texas von Mexiko an die USA übergegangen war.

One Way Ticket nach Frankfurt

Fernanda studierte schließlich in Mexiko, wusste aber die ganze Zeit, dass sie nach ihrem Abschluss nach Deutschland ziehen würde – ohne Rückfahrticket.

Warum sie sich speziell für Frankfurt entschieden hat? Nun, sie war in Mexiko bereits für unseren gemeinsamen Arbeitgeber tätig, dessen Deutschland-Hauptsitz in Frankfurt ist. Sie wusste, sie wollte in Bad Homburg ihren Master machen. Und sie wollte auf jeden Fall in eine Stadt ziehen, die eine direkte Flugverbindung nach Mexiko Stadt hat.

Der wichtigste Grund aber ist ein ganz privater. Mehrere Monate vor ihrem Umzug traf sich Fernanda in einer Bar in Mexiko mit einer Freundin, die wiederum einen Freund aus Argentinien und einen aus Deutschland mitbrachte. Dieser Freund aus Deutschland hieß Francesco und wurde bald zu Fernandas Partner und mittlerweile Ehemann. Und wie es der Zufall will, lebte Francesco in Frankfurt. Obwohl, nicht Zufall… Diocidencias!

Frankfurt am Main: Die perfekte Mischung

Fernanda liebt an Frankfurt besonders die Mischung aus Natur und Stadt. Orte wie der Römer und die Alte Oper haben es ihr besonders angetan. Aber das Beste ist, dass man in kürzester Zeit raus in die Natur fahren und zum Beispiel den Taunus bei einer Wandertour genießen kann.

Ein weiterer Aspekt, den Fernanda an unserer Stadt sehr liebt, ist der kulturelle Mix. Ein Großteil ihres Freundeskreises besteht aus Mensch mit Wurzeln in einem anderen Land.

Weil Frankfurt so international ist, muss man allerdings auch aufpassen, was man in der Öffentlichkeit erzählt. Nur, weil man sich nicht auf Deutsch unterhält, bedeutet das nämlich nicht, dass die umstehenden Personen einen nicht verstehen. So hat Fernanda einmal unfreiwillig in der S-Bahn die Unterhaltung von zwei Escortdamen mitangehört, die sich auf Spanisch im Detail über die Erlebnisse des Vorabends unterhielten.

Mexiko in Frankfurt: mi casa es tu casa

Wie können wir alle ein Stück Mexiko nach Frankfurt holen? Natürlich spielt das Essen eine wichtige Rolle. Fernandas Tipps:

• Fonda de Santiago: In diesem Restaurant im Nordend genießt Fernanda am liebsten die  authentischen Tacos und Tortillas
• Wer selbst kochen möchte, dem empfiehlt Fernanda die Tortillas der Marke “Komali” aus Hamburg. Fernandas Tipp: die kleinen „Taqueras“

Fast noch wichtiger als das Essen aber ist die Mentalität. Der berühmte Spruch „mi casa es tu casa“ (=“mein Haus ist dein Haus“) fasst es wunderbar zusammen: Es geht es darum, sein Zuhause zu öffnen, möglichst viele Freund*innen einzuladen, gemeinsam gutes Essen zu genießen und vor allem darum, zu teilen. Wie Fernanda sagt: In der mexikanischen Kultur bist du immer willkommen.

Die Familie spielt außerdem eine ganz wesentliche Rolle. Man ist nie nur ein einzelnes Individuum, sondern man kommt immer „im Paket“. Darum kennen Fernandas Freund*innen zum Beispiel auch ihre Eltern. Das Schöne an dieser Einstellung: egal, wohin man geht in der Welt, man ist nie alleine.

Fernanda Campos-Giuga – from Mexico City to Frankfurt by divine coincidence

Fernanda Campos-Giuga, born and raised in Mexico City, has lived in Frankfurt since 2017. But her relationship with Germany began almost two decades earlier. At the age of eight, her parents sent her and her siblings to a German school in Mexico City. In her teens, two stays in Germany as a guest student followed. Both experiences made a lasting impression on Fernanda. It was clear to her that she would move to Germany for good as soon as possible. The fact that she finally came to Frankfurt, of all places, is thanks to „divine coincidence”. She explains the meaning of the term during our conversation.

Fernanda also reports on culture shock experiences meeting German nudists for the first time, why you shouldn’t have intimate conversations in public in Frankfurt even in a foreign language, and why more Mexican mentality in Frankfurt is a gift to all of us.

Divine coincidences

Fernanda’s philosophy in life is that there are no coincidences, but only „diosidencias“. The word is composed of the Spanish „dios“ (=God) and „coincidencias“ (=coincidences). This means that the events in Fernanda’s life were and are not random, but have led her purposefully to where she is today.

The German School in Mexico

Fernanda has had a special relationship with Germany since she was a child. Her parents wanted her and her four siblings to attend an international school in Mexico City and grow up bilingual. To find the right place, Mom and Dad Campos sent their children to Japanese, French and German schools, among others. All the children – and their parents – clearly preferred the German school: the Colegio Alemàn Alexander von Humboldt.

This is how Fernanda started learning German at the age of 8. All the lessons were in German, except for Mexican history and Spanish.

Being a guest student in Germany: A formative experience

At the age of 12, Fernanda went to Germany for the first time as a guest student with the von Thun family in Grimma near Leipzig. She describes this time as a wonderful experience that had a great impact on her personal development. Was Fernanda already self-confident at the age of 12 to go abroad alone? No! Her self-confidence developed bit by bit in her interactions with her host family and her classmates. And she learned what is important for her in life: above all, interpersonal relationships.

A second stay in Germany followed when Fernanda was in the 11th grade. This time, she lived in Hamburg Harburg for a year and enjoyed Sylt, the fish market… and of course the Reeperbahn.

Ideally, Fernanda would have liked to stay in Germany right after her time in Grimma and after her time in Hamburg. But it was still too early for her parents to allow her to take this big step.

Body positivity made in Germany

Fernanda experienced a very particular kind of culture shock when she visited a lake near Grimma with friends for the first time. There was, as is often the case in Germany, a nudist area. The young Fernanda could hardly believe her eyes when suddenly an older gentleman stood in front of her, stark naked. And she later saw a whole family completely in the buff at a barbecue. 😲

Fernanda has a theory that nudism is so common in German culture because the human body is seen as something natural and is more accepted as it is. In Mexico, on the other hand, she says, it is more common to use plastic surgery.

Typical Mexican food – NOT!

The von Thuns wanted to conquer Fernanda’s heart with chili con carne. What they didn’t know was that this is, in fact, not a Mexican dish at all. When Mama von Thun served the meal, Fernanda just asked, „What’s that?“ 😂

The same goes for burritos, by the way. Chili con carne and burritos are Tex Mex dishes that Mexican restaurateurs developed for their US clientele in Texas after Texas passed from Mexico to the US.

One Way Ticket to Frankfurt

Fernanda ended up going to university in Mexico, but knew all along that she would move to Germany after graduation – without a return ticket.

Why did she choose Frankfurt specifically? Well, she was already working in Mexico for our mutual employer, whose German headquarters are in Frankfurt. She knew she wanted to do her Master’s in Bad Homburg. And she definitely wanted to move to a place with a direct flight connection to Mexico City.

But the most important reason is a very private one. Several months before her move, Fernanda met a friend in a bar in Mexico, who in turn brought a friend from Argentina and one from Germany. This friend from Germany, Francesco, soon became Fernanda’s boypartner and by now husband. And as coincidence would have it, Francesco lived in Frankfurt. Although, not coincidence… Diocidencias!

Frankfurt am Main: The perfect mix

What Fernanda loves most about Frankfurt is the mix of nature and city. She is particularly fond of places like the Römer and the Alte Oper. But what she loves most is that you can get out into nature in no time at all and enjoy the Taunus mountains on a hiking tour, for example.

Another aspect that Fernanda loves about our city is the cultural mix. A large part of her circle of friends consists of people with roots in another country.

However, because Frankfurt is so international, you also have to watch what you say in public. Just because you don’t speak German doesn’t mean that the people around you don’t understand what you’re saying. For example, Fernanda once involuntarily overheard the conversation of two escort ladies in the S-Bahn, who were talking in detail in Spanish about their experiences of the previous evening.

Mexico in Frankfurt: mi casa es tu casa

How can we all bring a piece of Mexico to Frankfurt? Of course, food plays an important role. Fernanda’s tips:

Almost more important than the food, however, is the mentality. The famous saying „mi casa es tu casa“ (=“my house is your house“) sums it up beautifully: It’s about opening up your home, inviting as many friends as possible, enjoying good food together, and above all, sharing. As Fernanda says, „In Mexican culture, you are always welcome”.

Family also plays a very important role. You are never just a single individual; you always come „as a package.“ That’s why Fernanda’s friends also know her parents, for example. The beauty of this attitude is that no matter where you go in the world, you are never alone.

Fernanda Campos-Giuga, nacida y criada en Ciudad de México, vive en Fráncfort desde 2017. Pero su relación con Alemania comenzó casi dos décadas antes. A los ocho años, sus padres la enviaron a ella y a sus hermanos a un colegio alemán en Ciudad de México. En su adolescencia, siguieron dos estancias en Alemania como estudiante invitada. Coincidencias divinas

La filosofía de vida de Fernanda es que no hay casualidades, sino „diosidencias“. Esta palabra se compone de „dios“ y „coincidencias“. Esto significa que los acontecimientos de la vida de Fernanda no han sido ni son aleatorios, sino que la han llevado intencionadamente al lugar en el que se encuentra hoy.

El Colegio Alemán en México

Fernanda ha tenido una relación especial con Alemania desde niña. Sus padres querían que ella y sus cuatro hermanos asistieran a un colegio internacional en Ciudad de México y crecieran bilingües. Para encontrar la institución adecuada, mamá y papá Campos enviaron a sus hijos a colegios japoneses, franceses y alemanes, entre otros. Lo que más gustó a todos los niños -y a sus padres- fue el Colegio Alemàn Alexander von Humboldt.

Así que Fernanda empezó a aprender alemán a los 8 años. Todas las clases eran en alemán, excepto historia de México y español.

Ser estudiante invitada en Alemania: Una experiencia formativa

A los 12 años, Fernanda fue por primera vez a Alemania como alumna invitada a casa de la familia von Thun, en Grimma, cerca de Leipzig. Describe esta estancia como una experiencia maravillosa que contribuyó enormemente a su desarrollo personal. ¿Tenía ya Fernanda tanta confianza en sí misma a los 12 años como para irse sola al extranjero? No, la confianza en sí misma se fue desarrollando poco a poco en las relaciones con su familia de acogida y sus compañeros de clase. Y aprendió lo que es importante para ella en la vida: sobre todo, las relaciones interpersonales.

Una segunda estancia en Alemania tuvo lugar cuando Fernanda estaba en el 11º curso. Esta vez vivió un año en Hamburgo y disfrutó de Sylt, del mercado de pescado… y, por supuesto, de la Reeperbahn.

Lo ideal hubiera sido que Fernanda se quedara en Alemania justo después de su estancia en Grimma y tras su paso por Hamburgo. Pero aún era demasiado pronto para que sus padres le permitieran dar ese gran paso.

Positivismo corporal made in Germany

Fernanda sufrió un choque cultural del tipo desnudo cuando visitó por primera vez un lago cerca de Grimma con unos amigos. Como suele ocurrir en Alemania, había una zona nudista. La joven Fernanda apenas podía creer lo que veían sus ojos cuando, de repente, un señor mayor se quedó completamente desnudo delante de ella. Y más tarde vio a toda una familia completamente sin ropa en una barbacoa. 😲

Fernanda tiene la teoría de que el nudismo es tan común en la cultura alemana porque el cuerpo humano se ve como algo natural y se acepta más tal y como es. En México, en cambio, dice, es más común recurrir a la cirugía plástica.

Típica comida mexicana – ¡NO!

Los von Thun querían conquistar el corazón de Fernanda con chili con carne. Lo que no sabían era que no se trata de un plato mexicano en absoluto. Cuando mamá von Thun sirvió la comida, Fernanda sólo preguntó: „¿Qué es eso?“ 😂

Lo mismo ocurre con los burritos, por cierto. El chili con carne y los burritos son platos Tex Mex que los restauradores mexicanos desarrollaron para su clientela estadounidense en Texas después de que Texas pasara de México a EE UU.

Billete de ida a Fráncfort

Fernanda acabó estudiando en México, pero siempre supo que se trasladaría a Alemania después de graduarse, sin billete de vuelta.

¿Por qué eligió Fráncfort? Bueno, ya trabajaba en México para nuestra empresa común, cuya sede alemana está en Fráncfort. Sabía que quería hacer el máster en Bad Homburg. Y definitivamente quería mudarse a un lugar, que tiene una conexión aérea directa con Ciudad de México.

Pero la razón más importante es muy privada. Varios meses antes de su traslado, Fernanda conoció a un amigo en un bar en México, que a su vez trajo a un amigo de Argentina y a otro de Alemania. Este amigo de Alemania se llamaba Francesco y pronto se convirtió en el compañero y ahora marido de Fernanda. Y la coincidencia quiso que Francesco viviera en Frankfurt. Aunque, no es coincidencia… ¡Diocidencias!

Fráncfort del Meno: la mezcla perfecta

Lo que más le gusta a Fernanda de Fráncfort es la mezcla de naturaleza y ciudad. Le gustan especialmente lugares como el Römer y la Alte Oper. Pero lo mejor es que puede salir a la naturaleza en un abrir y cerrar de ojos y disfrutar, por ejemplo, de las montañas del Taunus haciendo senderismo.

Otro aspecto que a Fernanda le encanta de nuestra ciudad es la mezcla cultural. Gran parte de su círculo de amigos está formado por personas con raíces en otro país.

Sin embargo, como Fráncfort es tan internacional, también hay que tener cuidado con lo que se dice en público. Que no hables alemán no significa que la gente que te rodea no te entienda. Por ejemplo, una vez Fernanda escuchó involuntariamente la conversación de dos señoritas de compañía en el S-Bahn, que hablaban detalladamente en español sobre sus experiencias de la noche anterior.

México en Fráncfort: mi casa es tu casa

¿Cómo podemos traer un pedazo de México a Frankfurt? Por supuesto, la comida juega un papel importante. Los consejos de Fernanda:

• Fonda de Santiago: A Fernanda le encanta disfrutar de los auténticos tacos y tortillas de este restaurante del North End.
• Si quieres cocinar tú mismo, Fernanda recomienda las tortillas „Komali“ de Hamburgo. El consejo de Fernanda: las taqueras pequeñas
• Fernanda compra aquí los ingredientes para una típica cena mexicana:

Sin embargo, casi más importante que la comida es la mentalidad. El famoso dicho „mi casa es tu casa“ lo resume a la perfección: Se trata de abrir las puertas de casa, invitar al mayor número posible de amigos, disfrutar juntos de la buena comida y, sobre todo, compartir. Como dice Fernanda: „En la cultura mexicana, siempre eres bienvenido”.

La familia también juega un papel muy importante. Nunca eres un solo individuo; siempre vienes „como un paquete“. Por eso, por ejemplo, los amigos de Fernanda también conocen a sus padres. Lo bonito de esta actitud es que, vayas donde vayas en el mundo, nunca estás solo.
