Gude und Kumusta! Herzlich willkommen zu dieser Folge von Global Village 069 – Die Welt zu Hause in Frankfurt.
Vom 15. bis zum 19. Oktober findet die Frankfurter Buchmesse 2025 statt. Das Ehrengastland dieses Jahr hat mich ein bisschen überrascht, ich habe es nämlich gar nicht mit Literatur in Verbindung gebracht. Allerdings völlig zu Unrecht. Und bei dem Interview für diese Folge ist mir klargeworden, dass ich eigentlich so gar nichts über dieses Land wusste und dass es allerhöchste Zeit war, das zu ändern. Denn es ist eine prallgefüllte Schatzkiste an Lebensfreude und Kreativität: Es geht um die Philippinen.
Unsere Reiseführerin für die Philippinen in dieser Episode ist die wundervolle Corinna Zimmermann, genannt Coco. Coco ist die Tochter eines deutschen Vaters und einer philippinischen Mutter. Sie ist in Rhein-Main geboren und aufgewachsen, hat aber immer wieder teils auch längere Abschnitte ihres Lebens auf den Philippinen verbracht.
Coco wird uns berichten, was so alles typisch philippinisch ist, und da gibt es eine ganze Menge. Von geradezu atemberaubender Spontaneität hin zu einer großen Liebe zu waghalsigen Tänzen und Karaoke. Es geht um die Vorreiterrolle der Philippinen beim Thema Gleichberechtigung von Mann und Frau, um philippinische Resilienz und darum, wie sie Coco in einer der schwersten Phasen ihres Lebens – ihrer Krebserkrankung – geholfen hat. Und natürlich sprechen wir über philippinische Literatur und was das Land an dieser Stelle ausgerechnet mit Island gemeinsam hat.
Hier vorneweg noch ein Spezialtipp für alle, die nicht auf die Buchmesse warten wollen: Im Mousonturm findet vom 18. bis zum 29. September das Festival „Sincerely Yours, the Philippines“ statt, mit Tanz, Performance und natürlich… Karaoke.

Gude and Kumusta! Welcome to this episode of Global Village 069 – The world at home in Frankfurt.
The Frankfurt Book Fair 2025 will take place from October 15 to 19. This year’s guest of honor surprised me a little, as I hadn’t associated it with literature at all. However, that was just me being ignorant. And during the interview for this episode, I realized that I actually knew nothing about this country and that it was high time to change that. Because it is a treasure trove bursting with joie de vivre and creativity: I’m talking about the Philippines.
Our guide to the Philippines in this episode is the wonderful Corinna Zimmermann, known as Coco. Coco is the daughter of a German father and a Filipino mother. She was born and raised in the Rhine-Main area, but has spent many periods of her life in the Philippines, some of them quite long.
Coco will tell us all about what is typically Filipino, and there is a whole lot to cover, starting with breathtaking spontaneity to a great love of daring dances and karaoke. We’ll talk about the Philippines‘ pioneering role in gender equality, Filipino resilience, and how it helped Coco through one of the most difficult phases of her life—her battle with cancer. And, of course, we’ll talk about Filipino literature and what the country has in common with Iceland in this regard.
Here’s a special tip for those who don’t want to wait for the book fair: From September 18 to 29, the Mousonturm will host the festival “Sincerely Yours, the Philippines,” featuring dance, performance, and of course… karaoke.

Mula Oktubre 15 hanggang 19, 2025 gaganapin ang Frankfurter Buchmesse (Frankfurt Book Fair). Ang guest country ngayong taon ay medyo ikinagulat ko, dahil hindi ko ito agad iniuugnay sa literatura. Ngunit mali pala ako. Sa panayam para sa episode na ito, napagtanto ko na halos wala talaga akong alam tungkol sa bansang ito at panahon na para baguhin iyon. Sapagkat isa itong napakayamang baul ng kasayahan at pagkamalikhain: Ang bansang tinutukoy ko ay Pilipinas.

At siyempre, tinalakay din namin ang panitikang Pilipino at kung bakit ito may kaparehong katangian sa bansang Iceland.
